ARINC wins Berlin Brandenburg contract

ARINC has been awarded the contract to supply and install the passenger check-in and departure systems at the soon-to-be-finished Berlin Brandenburg International Airport.

Under the contract, ARINC will install its common use passenger processing system (CUPPS) – vMUSE – as well as its BagLink baggage information distribution system.

The company is also required to provide full maintenance and support services for the systems over the duration of the contract.

ARINC has already implemented a live test environment on 54 workstations and installed its AviNet Airport service at the gateway, allowing for airlines to connect to the host systems immediately.

The vMUSE solution includes self-service kiosks and baggage drops, while the BagLink solution bridges existing airport and airline systems to ensure that bags checked in at common-use locations are routed securely.

The hardware installation is expected to be completed in February, and at full operation ARINC will have rolled out vMUSE on 153 workstations for check-in and back office desks, and on 188 boarding gate workstations.

A total of 31 airlines and handling agents will use the new systems when they have been rolled out.

Andreas Deckert, head of aviation management at Berlin Airports, said: “We are pleased that with ARINC we have found a competent and experienced partner for CUPPS services at Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

“The first units have already been operating for the test run of the airport, which started in November.”

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is the new international airport being built 11 miles south of central Berlin at the site of the current Schönefeld Airport.

When it opens on June 3 it will replace Tempelhof Airport, which closed in 2008, and the existing airports Tegel and Schönefeld – which will also close – as Berlin’s main airport.

The gateway will have an initial capacity for 27 million passengers annually, and can be expanded to accommodate up to 45 million.
