Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its status as the world’s busiest gateway for the 14th consecutive year in 2011, handling 92.4 million passengers – 3.7% more than in 2010.
The total included the highest number of international passengers (9.86 million) ever handled at the gateway.
“We’re growing faster than the North American average, which is no mean feat during these tough economic times,” enthuses Atlanta’s aviation general manager, Louis Miller.
Beijing Capital, tipped by many to overtake Hartsfield-Jackson in the next few years, welcomed a record breaking 78.6 million passengers (+6.4%), while Heathrow took third spot with 69.4 million (+5.5%).
The top five was completed by Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo Haneda which handled 66.7 million (-0.6%) and 62.5 million (+10%) respectively.
